Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate whether and how artificial intelligence (AI) awareness affects work withdrawal.

Design/methodology/approach

This survey garners participation from a total of 305 hotel employees in China. The proposed hypotheses are examined using Hayes’s PROCESS macro.

Findings

The results indicate that AI awareness could positively affect work withdrawal. Negative work-related rumination and emotional exhaustion respectively mediate this relationship. Furthermore, negative work-related rumination and emotional exhaustion act as chain mediators between AI awareness and work withdrawal.

Practical implications

Given the growing adoption of AI technology in the hospitality industry, it is imperative that managers intensify their scrutiny of the psychological changes experienced by frontline service employees and allocate more resources to mitigating the impact of AI on their work withdrawal.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the burgeoning literature on AI by elucidating the chain mediating roles of negative work-related rumination and emotional exhaustion. It also makes a significant forward in examining mediating mechanisms, notably the chain-mediated mechanism, through which AI awareness impacts employee outcomes.

Abstract

Purpose

Rapid prototyping (RP) technology is widely used in many fields in recent years. Bone tissue engineering (TE) is an interdisciplinary field involving life sciences, engineering and materials science. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) are similar to natural bone and it has been extensively studied due to its excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. This paper aims to review nanoscaled HAp-based scaffolds with high porosity fabricated by various RP methods for bone regeneration.

Design/methodology/approach

The review focused on the fabrication methods of HAp composite scaffolds through RP techniques. The paper summarized the evaluation of these scaffolds on the basis of their biocompatibility and biodegradability through in vitro and in vivo tests. Finally, a summary and perspectives on this active area of research are provided.

Findings

HAp composite scaffold fabricated by RP methods has been widely used in bone TE and it has been deeply studied by researchers during the past two decades. However, its brittleness and difficulty in processing have largely limited its wide application in TE. Therefore, the formability of HAp combined with biocompatible organic materials and fabrication techniques could be effectively enhanced, and it can be used in bone TE applications finally.

Originality/value

This review paper presented a comprehensive study of the various types of HAp composite scaffold fabricated by RP technologies and introduced their potential application in bone TE, as well as future roadmap and perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

Automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) are widely used in industrial fields. But most control strategies merely take the lateral force into consideration. This will reduce the accuracy, stability and robustness and will pay additional costs. Therefore, this paper aims to design a control strategy that initially considers lateral force. Thereby, it will improve the accuracy, stability and robustness and reduce the overall cost of AGV.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve the goal of comprehensively improving AGV operating performance, this paper presents a new scheme, combining the dual-wheeled chassis model (DCM) using proportional–integral–differential (PID) control and a supporting quick response (QR) code navigation technology. DCM is the core, which analyzes the deviation caused by lateral force. Then, DCM with PID control by the control law is combined to suppress the errors. Meanwhile, QR code navigation technology provides effective data support for the control strategy.

Findings

Most AGV experiments are carried out in a standard environment. However, this study prepares unfavorable scenarios and operating conditions for the experiments that generate detailed data to demonstrate this study’s strategy, which can make an accurate, stable and robust operation process of AGV under various adverse environmental and mechanical factors.

Originality/value

This study proposed DCM, fully considering lateral force and converting the force into velocity. Subsequently, PID controls the speed of two wheels to reduce the error. QR code provides an efficient and low – cost way to obtain information. The three are cleverly combined as a novel industrial AGV control strategy, which can comprehensively improve the operating performance while reducing overall costs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a novel candidate view of research on employer reputation. The authors examine how candidates evaluate a company’s employer reputation after failing in the job application process.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were mainly collected from Chinese university students. Regression analysis was used to evaluate the proposed hypotheses (n = 246).

Findings

The study reveals how candidates vary in their attributions of job-hunting failures and evaluations of employer reputation considering their different personalities (i.e. extraversion) and corporations’ procedural justice in the selection process. The empirical results show that rejected candidates’ trait extraversion and procedural justice in the selection process combine to influence internal attributions and thus affect their evaluations of employer reputation.

Originality/value

Understanding how rejected candidates evaluate employer reputation is vital to advancing employer reputation theory. This is one of the few studies to pursue this line of research. The research may also help companies develop more effective strategies to manage the candidates they reject and to maintain their employer reputations.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to review the recent corporate social responsibility (CSR) literature in China, which has the world's largest developing economy. Through discussions and critical review, the objective is to suggest future directions for CSR research in this country.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper starts with a review of recent CSR literature in the mainland, followed by an in‐depth critique of two major Chinese CSR studies conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Findings

In China, much of the CSR literature is conceptual, descriptive, or argumentative in nature. Proper research methodologies are not systematically applied in some studies, and supporting theories are lacking. Besides, self‐developed indicator systems, rather than internationally adopted systems, are used as the mainstream measurement tools in research focusing on CSR performance evaluation. In general, CSR research in China has just got started and has a long way to go.

Originality/value

Recent reviews of CSR literature have concentrated on emerging economies, particularly Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and so on. This paper is one of the first reviews of CSR studies in mainland China. It contributes to understanding the development of Chinese CSR research. After the review and discourse, several research questions are suggested for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

A distributed piezoelectric actuator (DPA) improving the deformation performance of wing is proposed. As the power source of morphing wing, the factors affecting the driving performance of DPA were studied.

Design/methodology/approach

The DPA is composed of a substrate beam and a certain number of piezoelectric patches pasted on its upper and lower ends. Utilizing the inverse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric material, the DPA transfers displacement to the wing skin to change its shape. According to the finite element method and piezoelectric constitutive equation, the structure model of DPA was established, and its deformation behavior was analyzed. The accuracy of algorithm was verified by comparison with previous studies.

Findings

The results show that the arrangement way, length and thickness of piezoelectric patches, the substrate beam thickness and the applied voltage are the important factors to determine the driving performance of DPA.

Research limitations/implications

This paper can provide theoretical basis and calculation method for the design and application of distributed piezoelectric actuator and morphing wing.

Originality/value

A novel morphing wing drove by DPA is proposed to improve environmental adaptability of aircraft. As the power source achieving wing deformation, the DPA model is established by FEM. Then the factors affecting the driving performance are analyzed. The authors find the centrosymmetric arrangement way of piezoelectric patches is superior to the axisymmetric arrangement, and distribution center of the piezoelectric patches determines the driving performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to provide an efficient meta-heuristic algorithm to solve the partial set covering problem (PSCP). With rich application scenarios, the PSCP is a fascinating and well-known non-deterministic polynomial (NP)-hard problem whose goal is to cover at least k elements with as few subsets as possible.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the authors present a novel variant of the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm, called Argentine ant system (AAS), to deal with the PSCP. The developed AAS is an integrated system of different populations that use the same pheromone to communicate. Moreover, an effective local search framework with the relaxed configuration checking (RCC) and the volatilization-fixed weight mechanism is proposed to improve the exploitation of the algorithm.

Findings

A detailed experimental evaluation of 75 instances reveals that the proposed algorithm outperforms the competitors in terms of the quality of the optimal solutions. Also, the performance of AAS gradually improves with the growing instance size, which shows the potential in handling complex practical scenarios. Finally, the designed components of AAS are experimentally proved to be beneficial to the whole framework. Finally, the key components in AAS have been demonstrated.

Originality/value

At present, there is no heuristic method to solve this problem. The authors present the first implementation of heuristic algorithm for solving PSCP and provide competitive solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the non-local piezoelectricity theory, this paper is concerned with two collinear permeable Mode-I cracks in piezoelectric materials subjected to the harmonic stress wave. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the Fourier transformation, the problem is formulated into two pairs of dual integral equations, in which the unknown variables are the displacement jumps across the crack surfaces.

Findings

Finally, the dynamic non-local stress and the dynamic non-local electric displacement fields near the crack tips are obtained. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of the distance between the two collinear cracks, the lattice parameter and the circular frequency of the incident waves on the entire dynamic fields near the crack tips, which play an important role in designing new structures in engineering.

Originality/value

Different from the classical solutions, the present solution exhibits no stress and electric displacement singularities at the crack tips in piezoelectric materials. It is found that the maximum stress and maximum electric displacement can be used as a fracture criterion.
